Mihingarangi Forbes, is a trailblazing journalist and producer who has carved an illustrious career spanning over two decades as a prominent Māori broadcaster.

In her late teens, Mihingarangi embarked on a journey to become fluent in te reo Māori, immersing herself in a total immersion course at Waikato Polytechnic. This transformative experience laid the foundation for her future endeavors.

Forbes entered the broadcasting scene in 1994 when TVNZ producer Moari Stafford recognized her potential and invited her to join the Māori news program Te Karere. This marked the beginning of a prolific career, encompassing roles at Aotearoa Television Network, where she produced programs like Wahine Toa and E Tipu e Rea.

Following stints on the high profile current affairs 60 Minutes, in 2005, Mihingarangi made a pivotal move to TV3’s Campbell Live. Her incisive interviewing skills came to the fore during a memorable encounter with Employers and Manufacturers Association Chief Executive Alasdair Thompson, challenging gender-based pay disparities.

In 2012, Forbes transitioned to Māori Television, where she produced Te Kāea before taking on the role of Native Affairs presenter and leading a series of high profile investigations.

n 2015 Mihingarangi joined RNZ as its Māori correspondent before rejoining Three in 2016 to launch the Māori current affairs series The Hui, which went on to win multiple awards including Best Presenter News and Current Affairs and Best Current Affairs series at the NZTV Awards.

Mihingarangi is also the creator, presenter and producer of the acclaimed docu-drama series NZ Wars (RNZ) and is the three time winner of Te Tohu Kairangi, Best Māori Affairs Reporter at the Voyager Media Awards.

Her dedication to her craft, underscored by numerous accolades (including Te Māngai Pāho Te Reo Māori Champion at the 2024 WIFT Awards) reflect Mihingarangi’s enduring influence as a Māori journalist and steadfast commitment to telling the stories that matter.
